“Mother please, I’d rather do it myself!”

Does anybody remember that famous Anacin commercial? Does anybody own that commercial and is willing to share with the rest of the world? It was a funny ad for sure. I think a pop song came out because of it. I’ve found a few Anacin commercials but not this gem. I’m ready for an Anacin right now because this heat wave is killing me!

Thats one of those ads that cracked me up a little kid.Anacin had a whole series of ads with the same general theme as that one over several years.Liked them all,but that one was the Mother of all ads.I actually have it,but the quality is so horrendous that I wouldnt put it on here,or anyplace else.Am looking for any better quality copy of that commercial that can find.Guess our best hope would be with shows that still have original ads that were sponsored by Whitehall Laboratories.

That was such a funny ad !!!

That pop tube you mentioned that had came out as a result of the Anacin ad...back in 1992 I was working at a small country music station in Virginia. At the time one of our djs was collector of novety tunes. As I can recall he had a bunch of records by the late great Dickie Goodman. Goodman famous for making so many "break in" recordings. I am not totally sure since its been 20 years about but I think the line "mother please..I can do it myself" had appeared in one of his later recordings shortly before his 1989 suicide, the one he did using bits from old commericals rather than pop tunes.

I do remember the recording was about him "meeting" dead celebrities..example..

Dickie : "..why look who is here John Belushi...what would you like to say to the young people out there?.."

"Belushi" ( the jingle Things Go Better with Coke )

I do remember the part when he was "talking" to porn actor John Holmes only to use a bite from those old AYDS diet candy ads. But the "mother..please" I dont have a clue as to who he had associated with..Joan Crawford perhaps?

Wikipedia doesn't mention this recording since I assume it wasn't released to the masses or perhaps maybe it wasnt even really Dickie Goodman ( djs at the time, many of them had no problem making their voices sounding like him Denver's Dave Otto comes to mind here )..

I do some more research on this..if I can find it I'll post it.

Well, I dub myself the queen of commercials, so let me go through my stuff and see if I have that particular ad. I'll go look right now, and if I do have it, I'll post it so others can see it too.

Okay, my other source didn't have it, either. Now I'm on a mission to find it!

Allow me to thank you, too, for your efforts. I have vague recollections of "Mother, PLEASE..." as a schoolyard catchphrase for a while. Would love to see it again.

Um, are you perchance in any way related to Sweeney Todd?

I choose not to answer that on the grounds that it might incriminate me...
